Thats Stupid

1 07 2008

A mixtape dropped on time!  Nothing worse than mixtape delays right?  The Cool Kids back with another joint.  The art is pretty interesting, I like that they keep using actual art for their releases.  Its on the short side but you cant hate on some new shit for nothing.

The Artistic Integrity

26 06 2008

Probably my favorite track of the Mixtape About Nothing, video does a good job of capturing  the vibe of the song.  Rik Cordero of Three/21 Media at work again.

Kibbles the Dog, Attorney at Law

I guess I need a late pass?  More unintentional insomnia has led me this.

Congrats & Daps to Pac Div

Pac Div inking their deal with Universal. I wish those dudes luck, this is huge. New mixtape dropping July 22nd.

Where I’m From

19 06 2008

I’m from PG County, where all the black people in Maryland who arent from Baltimore live*. Wale’s Mixtape About Nothing, was pretty nice especially the Seinfeld tracks I thought those were the highlights of the mixtape. When dropped it reminded me of something I’ve been meaning to do but only getting around to now. I figure I’d shine some spotlight on some area artists for the 6 people that read this.

Kev Brown

Kev Brown’s a pretty accomplished producer/emcee known for his signature boom bap sound. The Largo, MD native has been around for a minute, working with DJ Jazzy Jeff and coming to prominence after The Brown Album(the 1st to remix Jay-Z’s Black Album). A friend of mine actually tried to put me onto him back in 06 I think, but I slept on him at the time. It wasnt until I heard I Do What I Do a few months later that I became a fan and started checkin for Kev. I related a lot to his struggles of being broke, single, love and life in general.

This is probably my favorite joint. Kev Brown - Alone Again

Oddisee

Along with Kev Brown, Oddisee is one of my favorite members of the Low Budget crew. Oddisee is an insightful rapper who does his thing when it comes to observations about the area and everything else going on around him. In my eyes he really captures the essence of the area in a way others havent. A beast behind the boards and the mic, his debut album A Foot In the Door really showcased his skills. Tracks like “Gentrification”, which sheds light on the problem affecting DC. And “Propa” which is like a lyrical tour through PG, DC, MoCo.

OOGenesis

I stumbled across OOGenesis after some hardcore music scavenging. An artist(i love his drawings) and a beatmaker from somewhere in Maryland, OO is on the experimental tip like Flying Lotus. OOGenesis is a part of the new wave of music I’ve started listening to and I’m looking forward to seeing what else he can do.

Muhsinah

Muhsinah is the future. Or rather she’s now. Not only is she a talented vocalist but she’s dope on the keys and MPC as well. I had heard of her for awhile, but it wasn’t until I saw her live, opening for J*Davey that I felt the need to check out her music and compelled to cop her album. I cant begin to describe how talented she is so I’ll let “Construction” do it for me.

Check her website, Musinah.com lots of music treats.

The Five One

Fuck a genre. The Five One are three man band that fuse hip hop , punk and reggae sounds into something totally unique and different on every song. Red(guitar) handles the vocalist duties, while Blue(drums) and Green(bass) both rap. “By personifying color they are not only artists but art itself, and represent a lack of emphasis on individual identity, and an emphasis on creating music that strives to speak for everyone.” The Five One are putting out fun and original music as diverse as their influences.

After putting together their Virginia Complex album in 06, they’ve followed up with The Red Complex: Free Tape I and more recently The Green Complex: Free Tape II available to download on fiveoneband.com.

Max Mega

I mess with Max Megatron’s music enough that I extended my scope to Virginia Beach. Something about the area churns out artists and beatmakers with a style unlike most other spots. Max’s music is relatable, fresh and fun without trying top hard. I felt it was only a matter of time of puttin him up on here after upping Ced Hughes mixtape. Check it.

Children’s Guide To…

16 06 2008

Stumbled across these due to late night insomnia. Reminded me of Wonder Showzen slightly because of the subverted humor using “kids”. These are the latest 2 of the 6 videos done in the Children’s Guide to Growing Up series.  I have a twisted sense of humor but I think they’re hilarious.  Who doesnt love a bunch of foul mouth little tykes?  You might learn something yourself.

Reasons My Blog Will Suffer: #2

12 06 2008

Real Life

Last time it was GTA IV. This time real life is ruining my blog. Usually I spend an unhealthy amount of time in front of my computer, even at work(i got a job!) I pretty much just sit around and troll the web. But lately since summer started I’ve been pretty busy, and not had time or energy to crank anything out.

a lot of stuff has interfered with my “productivity”

I really wanted to use this picture.

Atlantic City (no incriminating evidence)

work

Forgot what it was like for awhile(unemployment sucks), but work is exhausting sometimes. You dont feel like trolling youtube for videos or writing 146 word blogs after grinding out menial tasks all day.

I think I’m back at a lull starting next week but I’ve been getting a lot of fresh air and all that jazz lately.

Nas - Be A Nigger Too [video]

9 06 2008

The much anticipated video for Be A Nigger Too has finally been released. After a bunch of poster previews its good to see the real thing. Personally I think this is Rik Cordero’s best video he’s directed only becuse it has more of a story than usually featured in his work. I thought the intro was one of the best parts of the video, real strong lyrics. The hook is still a bit corny, but the video has helped me appreciate the song more.

Oh yea this dropped too…

Heaven’s Gates and Hell’s Flames

3 06 2008

From The Carps Waves and Shambles EP. The video isn’t anything special but the song is amazing. I’ve been a fan of theirs since I stumbled across their music last spring. I’m sure I’ll be mentioning them again.

A Song for the Ladies

3 06 2008

Jon Lajoie is back with another rap video.

“Women are only good for 3 things: cooking, cleaninng and vagina…”

Not for sensitive people.
