So news has gotten out that Mr. Jones has decided to eschew the Nigger title and in favor of nothing. He’s leaving the album untitled. Like a lot of people I was apprehensive but confident Nas would be doing more than just creating controversy. When he named his album Nigger I really expected him to do something significant, since he has said all along that there was a purpose behind it. It seemed like he was just going to ignore the radio, the label and everyone else who stood in his way and just make the album he wanted.
Until now anyway. Now he’s backpedaled decided against using the N word because of the difficulties it will pose for retail sales and marketing I guess. So now that the album title has changed does that mean the album’s theme changes too? Does backing out of the Nigger title make things easier for him since he doesn’t have to deal with something as complex? Are we going to get another album that doesn’t entirely deliver because Nas wont commit to a theme in its entirety (i.e Hip Hop is Dead).
Nas is still the best out, but at this stage in his career its disappointing that Nas is not putting out albums out on his own terms or capable of delivering on his own vision.
“There are two ways to look at this: (1) Perhaps, Nas’s work didn’t reach the level of insight the album’s title required, in which case this might just be a good thing or (2) This is another case of corporate America being afraid to open the flood gates by stepping on a few toes, which is the same old loss for everyone trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents.”
